The Working Waterfront is an on-line publication as well as an in-print monthly newspaper with a circulation of 50,000 copies. Below is a description of the publication from its website, www.workingwaterfront.com/

“Published monthly by the Island Institute, Working Waterfront considers the myriad ways people earn their livings on the islands and waterfronts of Maine and the Gulf of Maine region. Our "beats" are fishing, small business, manufacturing, the arts, books, scientific research, communities, aquaculture, transportation, history, the environment -- just about anything connected with this coast and the lives of the people who live and work here.”

The Island Institute is the publisher of the Working Waterfront. Following is its Mission Statement, taken from its Web Site at www.islandinstitute.org/.

Mission Statement

Island Institute is a non-profit organization that serves as a voice for the balanced future of the islands and waters of the Gulf of Maine. We are guided by an island ethic that recognizes the strength and fragility of Maine's island communities and the finite nature of the Gulf of Maine ecosystems. Along the Maine Coast, the Island Institute seeks to:

  • · support the islands' year-round communities;
  • · conserve Maine's island and marine biodiversity for future generations;
  • · develop model solutions that balance the needs of the coast's cultural and natural communities;
  • · provide opportunities for discussion over responsible use of finite resources, and provide information to assist competing interests in arriving at constructive solutions.

Art Galleries:

There are three Art Galleries of note. (If there are others, let us know).

They are;

     (1) The Ain’t Right Gallery in the barn across from the General Store. As far as        we can determine there is no website for this gallery.

    (2) The Port Clyde Art Gallery, located with the Sea Side Bed and Breakfast. They     are mentioned in the B&B’s website but don’t have their own.

    (3) The Gallery By The Sea. Their website is (as expected)                         www.gallerybythesea.com.
